The Beauty We Find in the Details

Why do we collect things?

A cup brought home from a trip. A watch that belonged to someone we love. An old book found in a little shop. A beautifully made pen, a piece of jewelry, or even a chair whose carved detail makes us stop and look a little closer.

Most of these things are not necessary. And perhaps that is part of why they matter.

They bring beauty into the ordinary parts of our lives. They remind us of where we have been, the people we love, and sometimes simply of the pleasure we felt when we first discovered them.

When I think about ornament, I think about these details. The pattern around the edge of a tile. The engraving on a watch. The shape of a handle. A carved bedpost. The border of an old page. They are the small touches someone chose to add, often by hand, when something purely functional could have been left plain.

There is a story in those details.

Look closely and you begin to see the hand behind the work, the choices that were made, and even something about the place or time it came from. And when you follow those details, they have a way of leading you somewhere unexpected.

That is what drew me to ornament for this collection.

A Study in Ornament is a celebration of the details we notice, the objects we choose to surround ourselves with, and the small ways we bring beauty into everyday life, with each scarf carrying a story of its own.
